What Is A Loft Conversion?
Loft conversions are when you add square footage to your home by building an extra floor in the unused space above your existing ceiling. This is most commonly seen with lofts but can also be done on garages or sheds attached to homes. If you live in a flat and have access above the main living area, this may also apply! Central Roofing Contractors specialise in loft conversions for both businesses and residences throughout Leeds.
Benefits of Loft Conversion
There are many benefits to adding another level to your home. Some people might want more privacy, while others might need additional bedrooms for kids coming from university or getting married. Dormer conversions are great because they give homeowners something unique without taking up too much room!
Types of Loft Conversion
Roof window conversion
You can add a dormer with a roof window in this type of conversion. Adding this gives the space another source of natural light, which helps make it feel more open and more extensive.
Mansard conversion
This type of loft conversion has two roofs on various angles giving the homeowners plenty of choices as to what style works best for them and their needs.
Hipped roof conversion
A hipped-roof has two roofs, which meet at one point and create four walls with no ceiling per se can; therefore, we install numerous windows to add extra light into your home without compromising on space!
Hip-to-Gable conversion
The hip-to-gable loft conversion utilises the pitched roof, a popular choice and has been used for decades. The hip-to-gable loft conversion offers the most space compared to other types of conversions.
Gambrel conversion
The gambrel roof is stunning and provides plenty of height for the loft room. This type of conversion is most commonly used in barn conversions or farmhouse style homes.
Dormer conversion
We love adding these because they brighten up any room in our loft conversions! They work great when there is not enough room for an additional bedroom but still need that much-needed extra living space above your head. Several companies provide top quality products to our team, so we know we will complete every job to perfection!
Velux conversion
A Velux conversion is a popular choice for loft rooms because the window has a low profile and is installed flush with your roof, meaning you can add it to any home.
What Loft Conversion Involves
Stage one
Before we begin, your loft will need to be emptied so that there is room for us to move around – this means we must remove any furniture or personal belongings from the space. We then strip out all insulation and old brickwork, which can sometimes be up to 60cm deep!
Stage two
This stage involves constructing new staircases (if you want them) and creating solid stud walls where necessary; if required, these walls could also house wiring and piping. Once converted into drywall, floors are installed on top before tiling/laminating is added during stage three.
Stage three
In stage three, your new kitchen or room is installed. The roof will be insulated, and the loft boarding completed before all necessary fixtures are put in – this could include your bathroom, en-suite or shower!
Stage four
Finally, once everything has been connected up, you can begin to move back into your newly converted space!
Staircase Conversion
Sometimes, it’s necessary to turn your staircase into a loft conversion staircase. This means removing the old stairs and building new ones on top of the existing floor before adding insulation at either end to seal it off from your room below – if you wish!
We first build the new stairs up through your roof in staircase conversion before adding insulation and boarding.
When choosing a style for your loft conversion staircase, there are lots of options available – but if you’d like more detail about any specific techniques or types, please get in touch.
Loft Conversions for Kitchens and Rooms
You might not have thought about it until now, but if space isn’t an issue, then why not create that kitchen or bedroom/office you’ve always wanted? If your home has enough height, there are plenty of options available to make sure everything fits perfectly with any property.
Loft Conversion Refurbishment
Your loft may also need to be refurbished after some time to make sure it’s in good working order and will be ready for later life. If your loft conversion is a new build, you can choose the proper insulation to ensure warmth and comfort, but if there are any problems with dampness or mould, we may need to carry out some remedial work first before anything else.

Do roofers do loft conversions?
Loft conversions are just one of the many projects that we carry out. We are experts in this field and can help you with all aspects of work involved to get your loft conversion just how you would like it.
What type of roof do you need for a loft conversion?
It depends on the style of your home and how much space you have. It is also essential to consider what aspect it will be; north-facing rooms tend to give more light whereas east or west would not. And if they are south facing, then that’s perfect!
How tall does a roof have to be for a loft conversion?
This can depend on each building’s access point, but generally speaking, most attic conversions require at least 150mm headroom clearance to stand up straight. But we know this isn’t always possible, so sometimes our expert team can work with lower levels providing there is enough room between joists etc. We’d recommend having a rough idea of how tall your building is and get in touch with us to see what we can do.
Can I install solar panels in my loft room?
Yes! This is another general question. But the answer is yes, of course, you can. Many people install solar panels on their roofs and then run them through to their loft room, which also utilises the free heat that these generate even more efficiently.
